Chaos at the Stade de France last night
FRANCE — Last night, in Saint-Denis near Paris, was held the finale of the Champions League, opposing Liverpool to the Real Madrid. The football match began a little more than 30 minutes late, because of security problems, fans climbing up the security fences, and supporters blocked at stadium’s entrances. The Real Madrid ended up winning the game (1-0).
While the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Sports were at the “security HQ” of the stadium, dozens of supporters with “without tickets or with fake tickets have forced their way in’. Supporters with valid tickets were forced to wait outside without the possibility to enter within the stadium.
French police were sent to the stadium to attempt restoring peace. They sprayed harmless Liverpool’s supporters with pepper spray and tear gas. Jam Williams-Thomas, an English-speaking journalist – fully accredited – posted a picture of him, his eyes reddened by tear gas, saying: ‘What an absolute joke the police have been’. France has been widely criticized by foreign press about how the authorities and the French Football League handled the situation. Jason Burt, a Telegraph reporter released his story last night reading: ‘I was tear-gassed by disgraceful riot police’. The responsibilities of the police and the Minister of the Interior have been questioned since yesterday’s events – whose Minister, Gérald Darmanin, wrote on Twitter yesterday night, thanking ‘the numerous police forces that were mobilized tonight in this difficult context’. Mr. Darmanin stated this morning that in total, ’68 people have been arrested’.
Another hot spot of yesterday’s events was on the cours de Vincennes (12th arrondissement of Paris), where a fan zone had been set up for supporters not being able to watch the football game at the stadium. 44 000 supporters could watch the game from there. By Friday night, thousands of supporters had already been partying at bars or on the streets, inevitably leaving waste on the ground. After the football match, police forces and supporters played cat and mouse in the streets of the capital.
France is now widely blamed for its organization of the final – it had only 3 months to set it up as it was supposed to take place in St Petersburg, in Russia – and is now being questioned by numerous countries concerning the organization of the World Rugby Cup in 2023, and the Olympics in 2024.
